Learning IRIS = Learning through Instant Response in an Individualized Space. That is all.

Oh. You want to know more? The Learning IRIS is a shiny new concept supported by a customizable app. Along with the ever-increasing need for "just-in-time learning" comes the challenge of providing the appropriate content in the most effective way. It's something I've been thinking about for a while now.

When working with our clients, I have often been struck by the massive amount of content that exists in their organizations. Content is constantly being generated. Sometimes it's redundant, other times it's close to being so, but adds just enough new information to avoid being categorized as such. The learning space is bursting at the seams, but we can't seem to get a handle on ensuring that the content serves its intended purpose. It feels like a multidimensional balance problem. On one side we have millions of files of content, on another side we have technology and work demands, and on yet another side we have people with different roles, skills, and personalities. This global environment is trying to find its equilibrium but it is clearly out of whack. Recently, I decided to take a stab at what is clearly an overarching issue in the learning field.

To get started, I listed the challenges associated with the different categories: 

  • Content - large amount, redundant, possibly outdated, lacks focus, formats vary, reliability uncertain (leading to generation of... more content)
  • Tech/work demands - quick/constant change, LMS, LRS, eLearning, mobile, xAPI, cmi5, web, SharePoint, Intranet, security concerns, tools
  • People/roles: lack of skills clarity, not competency based, time, different learning styles, emotion, memory

Then, I tried to come up with some main features for a potential solution.

  • Content - the solution should provide collaboratively developed content which is  ratings based
  • Tech/work demands - the solution should provide an user-friendly, resource-based interface (think Google)
  • People/roles - the solution should, above all, be useful and accessible anytime, anywhere; the user should own the learning experience.

Once I determined these features, I started thinking in terms of learning and curation, so I developed a list of wishes which I shared with our brilliant software developers. The rest is history. The Learning IRIS application was developed and will be launched at the DevLearn Conference in couple of weeks.

  • Discovers what others in your role find useful.
  • Offers new learning suggestions based on intelligent recommendations.
